Nurturd – a community project striving towards disease prevention through health promotion. Informing and empowering us to nurture our health.

Hi!
My name is Victoria, and I have been a resident of Southwark for 19 years. I was born in Nigeria and moved here at 3, so Southwark as a community, was my first and most poignant taste of life in the UK – and I have enjoyed every part of living here since then.
I am 22 years old and currently in my fourth year of medical school at Kings College London. I am the eldest of three sisters, a lover of photography, a passionate maths tutor, on the Student Advisory Board for my university, and a governor for Southwark Adult Learning Service. Above all, I love solving problems.

This enthusiasm, combined with my passion for public health, birthed Nurturd‘. Research shows that yearly, up to 40% of deaths are avoidable. In 2020, 69% of these avoidable deaths were preventable deaths. This means that if there had been effective public health and primary prevention initiatives, these people might not have died.

This is a problem.

Nurturd’ recognises this and advocates disease prevention through health promotion. This would be achieved by delivering a series of health-oriented topics on social media, working with organisations, conducting research, and providing culturally competent workshops to the community. The vision is for everyone to feel informed and empowered to nurture their health and educate their loved ones to prevent such diseases.

At the moment, we are in the phase of refining the project by releasing surveys, having focus groups and gaining insights into what would benefit members of the community. If you would like to learn more or provide additional support, please:
