United St Saviour’s Charity has been providing almshouses for older people since the 16th Century, driven by the organisation’s core value to provide exceptional housing for the people of Southwark. Today, we provide 130 homes across three sites. With a focus on independent living in a safe and supportive environment, our homes are suitable for single occupants and couples aged 65 and over.
Our three almshouses (Appleby Blue, Hopton Gardens and St Saviour’s Court), are inspired by user-centric design. We provide a small number of 2 bedroom properties at St Saviour’s Court and Appleby Blue but the majority of our properties are self-contained one bedroom flats. To give all our residents’ peace of mind, each property is fitted with an emergency telecare system, that link directly to our on-site managers or out-of-hours call out service for when managers are not on site. We aim to provide best-in-class housing for the local people that need it most.
People living in our almshouses are residents, not tenants, and make weekly maintenance contributions towards the cost of their homes. Our weekly maintenance charges are based on affordable rent costs and in many cases will be covered by housing benefit, if the resident is eligible
