United St Saviour’s Charity is pleased to announce that Stephen Burns has been appointed our new Chair of the Board of Trustees.   Stephen joined the Board in 2016 and has been Deputy Chair for 2 years.  Staff and Trustees congratulated and wished him well taking on this position of great history and responsibility following his appointment on 28th September 2020.

Stephen’s work has been based in Southwark since 1991, so he knows the borough intimately, and his appointment is therefore perfectly timed to coincide with our forthcoming expansion of our work across the whole of Southwark.

Stephen is the Executive Director for Care and Communities at Peabody, one of London’s largest and oldest housing associations and charities.  He joined Peabody in 1998 and is now responsible for Peabody’s housing management and community investment. He also leads Peabody’s sheltered and supported housing provision.

He has spent 11 years working for charities, technology companies and the welfare to work sector, and also holds various voluntary and non-executive positions on Boards, including Trust for London.

Stepping down from the Chair after 6 years was Sir Richard Heaton KCB. He has retired from the Board having reached the end of his maximum trustee term of 9 years. He has led the charity through a period of major growth and transformation, and is looking forward to seeing the new Appleby Blue almshouse open in 2021. The charity is grateful for his passionate, thoughtful and imaginative leadership in Southwark.
