We are pleased to announce 7 large grant awards for exciting and valuable initiatives that will make a huge impact in north Southwark. These support our current themes: positive ageing, levelling the playing field and strong, resilient communities.

Power2 – Power 2 Southwark.

This grant will support the charity, Power2, to improve aspirations, confidence, attainment and wellbeing for 64 disadvantaged young people and reduce risk of exclusion over 2 years. Phase 1, Teens and Toddlers, involves the teenagers (selected by schools) mentoring children in a nursery/primary school setting whilst completing a qualification in Interpersonal Skills. The Young Leaders follow-on concentrates on increasing employability and improving life skills.

Salmon Youth Centre – Intensive support for high-risk young people in north Southwark.

This 2 year grant will enable the Salmon Centre team to provide intensive support to young people facing the highest levels of disadvantage, risk and need. Sports, arts and other activities will help to boost health and wellbeing and academic achievement. Alongside this, Salmon will provide mentoring, training and employment opportunities, and mediation between families and young people when relationships break down.

Home Start – Family Support at Home & Mellow Parenting Programme.

This 3 year core grant will enable Home Start to deliver targeted early intervention for marginalised children and families through a peer support network. Staff and volunteers work with parents to make changes that improve their lives and help prevent adverse childhood experiences.  With the support of a volunteer, families develop the skills to access services, counter isolation, build confidence and develop strong bonds with their children.

Link Age Southwark – Continuing to connect communities for positive ageing in North Southwark.

Also a 2 year grant, this will support Link Age to connect older people to local communities through activities and befriending. Staff will assess older people at home and match them to a personalised package of support delivered by fully vetted and trained volunteers. The intervention is designed to prevent loneliness and social isolation, and foster a stronger local community where older people feel respected, supported and a part of the life going on around them.

Silverfit – Silverfit Southwark.

Also focused on older people, this continuation, one year grant, will sustain Silverfit’s dynamic and popular programe of sports and social activities.  Weekly fitness and social sessions of Nordic Walking, Pilates, Yoga and Cheerleading will be held in Burgess Park, Docklands and Castle Leisure Centre for free or at low-cost. Delivered by a combination of staff and enthusiastic volunteers, the programme improves the health and wellbeing of older people and builds connections and friendships.

Southwark Law Centre – Planning Voice.

This one year grant will continue the important work being carried out by the Law Centre, in partnership with the Southwark Planning Network, to enable local people and groups to influence the planning process.  It will build the capacity and knowledge and of local groups, and empower residents from more economically and socially disadvantaged communities to have a voice on planning and regeneration issues.

Surrey Docks Farm – Tower and Riverfront Development Phase 2.

This capital grant will enable the Farm to complete its Tower and Riverfront Development. This ambitious and exciting development will restore and upgrade the Farm’s Tower, River Room and surrounding landscape to create an engaging and accessible new facility for the whole community – and many other local groups – to use and enjoy.
