On Thursday 29 October, Appleby Blue Almshouse and Community Centre in Bermondsey opened its doors for its second free Family Fun Day of the year. Over 240 local children, parents, grandparents and residents came together for an afternoon of seasonal activities.

Families filled the centre’s tables with autumn crafts, including paper-plate owls, leaf wreaths, colouring and play dough. Outside, the courtyard came alive with table tennis and ball games.

In the community kitchen, our partners at Spring Community Hub served freshly made pumpkin soup and led a pumpkin pie cooking class for local children. Many of them were trying out their kitchen skills for the first time. Millwall Community Trust hosted ball games in the courtyard, and our face-painter, Gabriella transformed young visitors into mermaids, superheroes and autumn creatures. Appleby Blue residents also joined in the fun by handing out trick-or-treat sweets to visiting children.

The event reflects the centre’s role as an intergenerational hub for Southwark. It is a place where older residents and their neighbours of all ages can connect, learn and enjoy time together, helping to reduce isolation and build a stronger, more connected community.

“It was fantastic to see the Appleby Blue Community centre so full of life. Days like this show what Appleby Blue is for: a home for our residents that is also a welcoming space for the whole neighbourhood. Thank you to our partners and to every family who came along.” – Thomas Lans-Ross, Community Centre Manager
