We are pleased to announce that United St Saviour’s has now purchased the Huntsman and Hounds pub in the heart of Walworth.   The Huntsman and Hounds is located in Elsted St and is one of the last remaining pubs in an  area undergoing rapid transformation and re-development.  Built in 1892, this striking building has served the community for decades but was recently under threat of closure.  A campaign led by the Walworth Society to have the pub protected as an asset of community value helped ensure its survival. We are proud to now add The Huntsman to our existing portfolio of historical properties in Southwark – the rental income from which supports our community investment programme and almshouses.

The new publicans currently run one of our other pubs, the Market Porter in Borough Market, and a number of other pubs around London. Their ambition is to make this a true community pub that works with, and appeals to, a wide range of local customers. Eventually they propose to introduce teas, coffees, cakes and more traditional pub food throughout the day. They are making a few changes to the interior of the pub in readiness for re-opening later in August.

Jeremy Leach from the Walworth Society says ‘We are really pleased that United St Saviour’s has helped to safeguard the future of this important local pub. We are looking forward to working with the charity and the new publicans to make this important local community pub successful once more.’
