In recent years we’ve taken large strides to ensure that we play our part in tackling inequality in Southwark, particularly in relation to the Black community.  In 2021 we set up a ringfenced Equalities Fund and over the course of the year 38% of all our grants went to groups run by, and for, the Black residents.  Next year we are aiming higher.  After talking to a number of local groups, we’ve changed the way we assess and monitor grants applications to make sure that they are truly accessible. We’re also using specialist consultants to support Black and user-led groups get the support they need to grow.

To address the historic lack of diversity in our social housing for older people, we’ve been working with Black community groups (such as Walworth Golden Oldies) to more effectively reach and recruit their users.   Finally, we have committed to increasing the diversity of our board. We already have 3 Black trustees and will soon be recruiting more – working hard to ensure that they reflect the wider community we serve.

Of course we recognize there is more to do and we will continue to challenge and push ourselves in the years ahead.  And over the course of our journey we’ve met some amazing people.  So during Black History Month (and beyond) we will be celebrating the work of some remarkable local people who are doing – and achieving – extraordinary things for their communities. Look out for our first ‘Community Heroes’ over the course of the month.
