United St Saviour’s Charity will make £50,000 of funding available to small, grassroots charities in Southwark via Funding Differently, a community-led, participatory mechanism led by Community Southwark. Instead of running its regular small grants round during the second half of this year, United St Saviour’s Community Investment Committee has made the bold decision to contribute its funds via this devolved approach, putting decision making power in the hands of communities.
Princess Bernard, Chair of United St Saviour’s Community Investment Committee, says:
This test responds directly to the challenges which smaller, grassroots groups in Southwark have told us they face. We have nurtured and backed Funding Differently for two years with our partners at Community Southwark, making its funding inclusive, unrestricted and light touch. We are now proud to join forces with others to see Funding Differently grow its impact.
Our vision is to build a strategic, place-based funding landscape that offers a pipeline from micro-grants (such as the Southwark Changemakers programme), to mid-level support (Funding Differently), to long-term investments (our larger grants). This will create a clear, fair route for local groups – who do so much for equity, prevention and justice in our borough – to grow their power over time.
United St Saviour’s Charity’s grant funding will be combined with funding from Partnership Southwark (NHS South East London Integrated Care Board) and the Peter Minet Trust, giving groups access to a total of £275,000. The fund will open for applications in the autumn.
Small grants through the Funding Differently programme will be available to grassroots organisations in Southwark with an annual turnover of less than £100,000 (for more details, see here). Southwark-based organisations with a higher turnover will be able to apply for support via United St Saviour’s large grants round, which will open in Autumn 2025.
