United St Saviour’s Charity has increased its community grant giving in north Southwark for 2016/17 and expanded its expertise by recruiting three new trustees to its board, and a new Head of Community Investment to its staff team.

The newly appointed board members all work in north Southwark and bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience. Stephen Burns is an Executive Director of Community Investment for Peabody Trust housing association.  Nicola Steuer is a Director at the School for Social Entrepreneurs in Tooley Street, and Rachel Findlay is the Chief Operating Officer for the New Philanthropy Capital based in Park St, Bankside.  Sarah Thurman is the Charity’s new Head of Community Investment and joins from Hyde Housing in Bankside where she managed its Charitable Trust.

The Charity has also announced large grant investments for 2016/17 totalling £547,000 to 11 charities and social enterprises working in north Southwark’s community, up from £500,000 in 2015/16. Successful applicants include Bankside Open Spaces Trust, to develop community green champions at new sites in Bankside; Silverfit – an older people’s keep fit programme which is led by a triathlete in her seventies and is expanding its operation in north Southwark; Bermondsey Spa based London Reclaimed, a young people’s carpentry, joinery and furniture making workshop; and Walworth’s Pembroke House to train local residents in the principles and practices of community organising. Martyn Craddock, the Charity’s Chief Executive since 2015 said: “This is an exciting time for United St Saviour’s and our community stakeholders. We are delighted to have recruited such a fantastic range of experience and skills in community investment, sheltered housing and finance. Together with our increased grant giving and the beautiful new almshouse proposed for Southwark Park Road, we are confident that United St Saviour’s Charity will make a real and lasting impact for  our communities in north Southwark that are most in need.”
