It has been over a year since United St Saviour’s Charity opened the doors to Appleby Blue – a new generation of almshouse in the heart of Bermondsey. Today, 65 residents call it home, supported by beautiful design, strong community ties, and a model of independent living that is already transforming lives.

After Appleby Blue’s first year, we’ve created a special report capturing its impact – from transforming lives to sparking new ideas for later living across the UK.

In this short time, Appleby Blue has:

  • Given older people choice, dignity and beautiful homes designed for later life.

  • Created a vibrant community hub where neighbours cook, learn, and share life together – from intergenerational “Songs & Smiles” sessions to rooftop gardening and cultural cookery classes.

  • Shown how thoughtful design, personal support, and food can be powerful tools for connection, wellbeing, and resilience.

Appleby Blue proves that housing for older people can be aspirational, inclusive, and joyful; it’s not just a roof over one’s head, but a home that strengthens the whole community.
