Providing homes

September 2006 saw the grand opening of our new purpose built retirement sheltered housing site in Purley, Surrey.

The new development has 54 modern, spacious one and two bedroom flats. Each has a sitting room with fire place and flame-effect gas fire, fully fitted kitchen, with fridge-freezer and oven supplied. All windows are double-glazed and some bedrooms and sitting rooms have air-circulation systems fitted to ensure year-round comfort. Additional safety features include a shower-room/toilet with level access shower and a security call connected to the site house manager or out of hours community alarm centre.

What are the facilities like?

The communal lounge is a place for residents to come together outside their flats, to chat, have tea or coffee and generally watch the world go by. It also plays host to a range of parties, coffee mornings and get-togethers that St Saviour’s residents organise amongst themselves. There is also a full range of outdoor furniture that residents use on fine days in the pretty garden and patio areas.

A well-equipped laundry with full washing and drying facilities is available for residents to use for a modest weekly charge.

Local shopping, transport and
other facilities

An extensive range of groceries and other provisions is available at the nearby Tesco Hyperstore (15 mins to walk or a short bus ride). Meanwhile the local Purley High Street also provides a range of shopping, including Boots, Laura Ashley, and other small retailers. For a full range of High Street shops and department stores residents go to Croydon, just three miles away.

If fitness is your thing, nearby Fitness First offers discounted membership (it offers off-peak discounts) and a range of exercise classes specifically aimed at the over-50s.

A well-stocked library with a good selection of large-print books and DVDs is also a matter of minutes away.

For those wishing to venture further afield, nearby Reedham station has direct links to London Bridge and also stops at East Croydon, which has frequent connections to both central London and the south coast.
Who is eligible
for the flats?

Residents, known as Collegians, must be retired, local to Southwark (or very close by) and on limited incomes with low capital and/ or savings. They must be able to live independently, with social services support if necessary.

Please note: As of November 2008, the Charity will be allowing residents of Lambeth, Greenwich, and Croydon to apply for flats. Candidates from these areas must be over 60, on low incomes with little capital.

What about rent?

Collegians are required to pay a weekly maintenance contribution rather than rent. It is based on affordable rent costs and in many cases will be covered by housing benefit.

If you have any questions or need assistance to fill out the form please contact Ellen Mockler on 0208 660 1223.
