The chair of the United St Saviour’s Charity, Philip Sturrock, said: “We believe in the key value of local trustees and we are delighted that the torch that Charles Hopton lit in 1752 has now been passed to a strong local Charity.

Hopton’s Almshouses were opened in 1752, built with money left by merchant Charles Hopton whose will (made just five days before his death in 1730) stipulated their establishment.

Two new members have been appointed to the governing bodies of the United St Saviour’s Charity. St Saviour’s was founded in 1540, and it serves the people of Southwark by managing almshouses and giving out grants totalling £500,000 a year.

The new appointments are Richard Heaton, a lawyer and senior civil servant, and Rahamut Bhuiyan, an accountant and auditor.

Richard Heaton

Richard Heaton is a Director General in a Government department and currently leads the civil service response to the challenges and opportunities of our aging society. He collects British and Indian paintings and lives in the Borough, SE1. Richard has joined the Charity’s Board and the Housing Committee, which manages the almshouses for older people.

Mohammad Rahamut Ullah Bhuiyan

Rahamut Bhuiyan is a chartered certified accountant and auditor, and works for a firm of chartered accountants in SE1. He lives with his family in Rotherhithe. Rahamut has joined the Charity’s Finance and Investment Committee, which oversees the Charity’s £25 million investment portfolio.

Welcoming the two new appointments, Philip Sturrock, Chair of St Saviour’s, said: “Richard and Rahamut bring unique and complementary qualities to the Charity. We believe that they will help St Saviour’s to move from good to great, and to become a standard bearer for almshouses and charitable foundations throughout England.”

Jim Wintour joined the United Saint Saviour’s Charity as Director in October 2010. Jim was previously Director of Housing and Adult Social Care at Camden Council. Prior to his work at Camden he was Director of Neighbourhood Services at Greenwich Council and Chief Executive of Gravesham Borough Council. He has also been chief executive of the Queen’s Cross community based housing association in Glasgow and head of campaigning for Shelter. He is a former Southwark resident and holds a master’s degree from Harvard University.

Jim is very excited by the challenge of his role at United St Saviour’s. He shares the passion of the Trustees of United St Saviour’s about improving the lives of the people in our area of Southwark.

He is committed to increasing our income, to finding more Southwark residents to live in our lovely almshouses, and to listening more to local residents and other voluntary organisations in Southwark.
